For Valenstine's Day, Natalya, my beautiful and thoughtful wife, bought us tickets to see Maria Mena. She is from Norway, but is famous for singing "Just Hold Me". On her newest album, "Cause & Effect" her most played song is "All This Time". I really like her music. It was a great gift for the tickets. The venue was great--the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt, Germany. We got there just in time for the opening act, Jarle Bernhoft, was awesome! He had some kind of looping device, and he would do a loop with the guitar, and then add a loop with rhythm by hitting beats on his guitar, and then sing along, and in the middle add loops of background vocals, adding harmony as he went. It was really cool.
Maria Mena herself was really great. Her voice has so much expression and emotion behind it, just like the songs themselves. She talked some about some of her songs to give some background on them. That was really cool. In the middle, she did a duet with Jarle Bernhoft, and I recorded it with my phone, and here it is:
Keep in mind that that was recorded with my phone, but it at least shows the talents of the two performers.
All in all, it was a great concert!
This past weekend we went to Southside. A friend of ours, Stephanie, aka Stickers and Bones, has a wrap-up of her experience here.
Ours was slightly different. We arrived late Friday night, around 10:30 or something. We put our stuff in our tent, which our group had brought with them and set up for us! Thanks, guys! It was slightly raining then, so we put on our less-than-paper thin ponchos (which work great, by the way) that we bought for a buck a piece, and headed off to the concerts.
We had to trudge our way through some mud although most of the way there was a paved airstrip. The concert that we pushed our way to was Marilyn Manson. It was crowded. I don't have anything against the guy (guy, right?), but neither myself nor Natalya own an album by him, or have really listened to his music. All I saw was a dude dressed in black yelling into a mic. One of his bandmates looked really cool, though, with his guitar hanging low and the overcoat out of the Matrix.
We left the concert, partly because we weren't fans of the music, partly because Natalya couldn't even see the big screens, much less the stage, and partly because people kept bumping into us.
We went back to the tents and talked with some of the others in the cold breezy evening for awhile before we turned in for the night.
Next morning, we woke up, Natalya and I decided it was enough for us, and we packed up and drove home. After a light rain as we were driving away, the rest of the weekend was sunny and warm.
Oh well.
