I read a very interesting article in the New York Times about sleep and lack of it. I recommend reading it. People who get enough sleep live longer than people who don't. I've been interested in sleep for a long time. What does that have to do with the picture above? Absolutely nothing! I just got this picture and some others not too long ago, so since I didn't have 'sleep' picture to put with this post, I thought I'd put this up there. It was taken on the Heidelberg castle grounds.
This was a picture that was taken at John's wedding that took place on August 31st, 2007. From left to right, there's Mark, Me, Paudie, Thomas, John, Alex, and Mr. Gentle (a.k.a. J.R.). Don't ask me what we're all thinking about or what we're looking at. I think what I was thinking at that exact moment was either, "How can I manage to look cool in this photo," or, "If Mark moves quickly, will I lose my balance and fall?" I just got the picture yesterday from the bride, Gillian, via email, hence the delay in posting. By the way, best wishes to John & Gillian for a happy and long marriage!
"If you think it's so easy to get your bride, you are wrong!" is what the Maid of Honor told me when I came to pick up Natalya. Here started my trials to claim my bride!
First I had to call out, "I love you, Natasha!" in Russian three times to get the key thrown down. Mostly successful--the first time I said, "I love Natasha!" and then I added the "you" the last two times.
Then I had to say the names I call her (like pet names) for each of these cut-out steps (like the ones they use to teach dancing), which I didn't do too badly at.
Then I had to pick out her lips from a paper with about 8 different lips. I got it on the second try.
I had to do more stuff, but that's all the videos I was able to make in the time allotted thus far...
I added a video of her modelling her wedding dress taken shortly before I arrived to pick her up. It's here! Take a look! That's my wife!
If you can't see the above pictures, then you can go here and see any which one you want! I hope you like them!
Just a quick note...
The wedding went great! It started at 12 and ended at around 12:30, that night, and then started again the next day. The ceremony itself lasted only for about 10 minutes, but that was the easiest part.
Now I'm pretty much relaxing and taking it easy.
There is SO much to describe and SO many pictures and videos, I have material for ages. I'm sure you'll be tired of hearing about it.
I'll just leave you with one thing that happened during the wedding. I had to dance the Can-Can with another two guys to get Natalya's shoe back. I'll explain later, and yes, I have the video.
Take care, and wish me luck for the trip back!
In what country did the largest industrial accident happen in 1984?
It is widely regarded as the largest industrial accident ever. The answer will be at the bottom of this post, in the form of a link.
Yesterday, I participated in the Pub Quiz at O'Reilly's Irish Pub yesterday with Beau, Stephanie, Matt, and Natalya. It was pretty easy for us, except for the above question. There was one that had a medley of 7 songs that were just a snippet of theme songs from 70s TV shows and movies. We missed one from a German TV show and we missed The Streets of San Francisco, but we got The Godfather, Superman, The Six Million Dollar Man (thanks to Beau), Jaws, & Star Wars. By the way, the one country that has no exports in Europe is Monaco.
Wedding Paperwork
Also, yesterday Natalya & I went on a paperwork hunt for some stamps & seals. We had to get notarized and get an Apostille for my document saying that I am free to marry. Now we just have to get that translated into Russian (the translator is working on that right now) and we'll be all set! Well, we hope we will be. Everybody pray that all our paperwork gets accepted by the authorities in Kazakhstan and we come home with a legal marriage certificate that we can use here in Germany as well. I think we'll have to get an Apostille while in Kazakhstan for our marriage certificate. No problem!

Don't let the picture fool you, it wasn't USSR or even Ukraine. The Chernobyl disaster happened in 1986, and has approx. 4,100 deaths attributed to it. This disaster happened two years earlier and has more than three times the number of deaths Chernobyl has attributed to it, and I don't remember hearing about it. I definitely remember hearing about Chernobyl, though.
Yesterday we drove to Mannheim to pick up my wedding ring that I had ordered from Wempe. No, that's not it above. That is the much fancier wedding band that we picked out from Tiffany & Co., better known simply as "Tiffany's." Maybe you can't really tell from the picture, but the ring is open with the two ends being heart-shaped. I think it's great. Very cool, classy, elegant, and really fits with Natalya's engagement ring.
My ring is very simple. It's white gold, it's thick and heavy, and it's bevelled on the inside as well the outside.
I have some great news! Natalya recently got back from Kazakhstan and while she was there, she was arranging some of the details of our wedding! We are going to have it on the 18th of August in Kokshetau, Kazakhstan! I am really looking forward to it!!! I haven’t blogged in awhile because I’ve had a cold since before Natalya got back and I just haven’t felt like it. I still have the cold and hopefully will be over it soon, but that doesn’t make me feel any less happy about getting married! J
